Imogen Stidworthy (b. 1963)

3"18 (2011)

The two voices heard in 3"18 bear the effects of traumatic and life-changing experiences. D is a veteran of the wars in Bosnia and Iraq and has PTSD (post traumatic stress syndrome), while Tony O'Donnell has aphasia, following a stroke, which effects his language abilities and structure. The two men’s words are based on an extract from Sebald's 'Rings of Saturn' in which he recounts a memory of the ruins of Berlin in the aftermath of the second world war. The men’s experiences effect their words as a process of translation, filtering them and reshaping their sense and structure, loosening them from the original framework and bringing them into their own.
