Hearspool is an ongoing series of hourlong experimental radiophonic pieces by Momus. They were originally commissioned by Basic.FM in Newcastle, England. At first there are Sherlock Holmes spoofs and Cutleresque songs, but later it’s more about re-editing BBC radio talks and intercutting snippets from documentaries about artists or travel. Themes (noise, cities, insatiability) are announced and then restated in increasingly jumbled forms. Surrealism, estrangement, horror and hauntology become the norm, with the eerie, the antiquated, the refined and the fatigued rubbing up against an unexpected ASMR-friendliness (which makes Hearspool, apart from anything else, a seductive insomnia remedy). -- Momus
