Caricaturiste dans un premier temps pour différents journaux, Marcel Duchamp devient l'un des artistes de référence pour de nombreux plasticiens contemporains. C'est, en effet, en 1912, lors de la présentation de son "Nu descendant d'un escalier" au Salon des Indépendants de Paris, malgré un retour assez médiocre, puis surtout lors de l'Armory show de New York, en 1913, qu'il se fait vraiment remarquer.

C'est avec sa célèbre "fontaine", un simple bidet renversé et baptisé ainsi, qu'il va marquer les esprits et lance ce que l'on appelera le "ready made" qui consiste à hisser un objet manufacturé au rang d'oeuvre d'art par le seul choix de l'artiste.

Plusieurs oeuvres de Marcel Duchamp répondrons ainsi à cette définition telles que "La mariée mise à nu par ses célibataires, même". En 1942, il met en place avec André Breton l'exposition "First papers of surrealism" à New York qui le révèle finalement assez proche des dadaïstes. Né en 1887 en France, il décéde aux Etats-Unis, en 1968.
