Irwin Chusid with The Hoof & Mouth Sinfonia - Next
"Next" is WFMU DJ Irwin Chusid's take on Jacques Brel's harrowing tale of vulgar virginity loss that triggers lifelong emotional torment. Says Irwin: "This is not autobiographical, thank you. I just like the song's absurdist tragicomic aura and the theatricality of the lyrics." Backing was provided by the Hoof & Mouth Sinfonia, a troupe of WFMU colleagues who, on the final night of the station's two-week Spring fundraiser, serenade the listeners over the air. Vocals at this perennial debacle are provided by staffers who generally have sense enough the rest of the year to refrain from public exhibition of their awkward crooning. The arrangement was based on a 1974 version by the Sensational Alex Harvey Band.
