John Furnival, England | b. 1933 Europa & Her Bull (from Aspen 7) Babacus (no date) Untitled (no date) Born in London. 1951-55 Wimbledon College of Art; 1957- 60 Royal College of Art. 1960 moved to Gloucestershire where he taught Fine Art at Stroud and Cheltenham Art colleges until 1966. 1963 exhibited at Gloucestershire College of Art, where Dom Sylvester Houédard first saw his work; together they set up Openings Press, 1964. Included in Between Poetry and Painting, ICA, 1965. Taught BAA initially full-time, from 1966, organised many exhibitions of Concrete Poetry with Houédard that evolved from projects he worked on with Corsham students. 1967 one-man exhibition Galerie Riquelme, Paris. Subsequent one-man exhibitions include 1971 retrospective. Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, organised by Ceolfrith Arts Centre, Sutherland; 1972 Richard Demarco Gallery, Edinburgh and Arnolfini Gallery, Bristol; awarded Arts Council Prize, International Print Biennale, Bradford. Frequent international group exhibitions of visual and concrete poetry. 1974 one- man exhibition Thumb Gallery; 1979 exhibited with Tom Phillips, Thumb Gallery.
