Jalal Toufic was born in 1962 in Beirut or Baghdad. He is the author of, among other books, (Vampires): An Uneasy Essay on the Undead in Film (1993; 2nd ed., 2003), Forthcoming(2000), The Withdrawal of Tradition Past a Surpassing Disaster (2009), What Is the Sum of Recurrently? (2010) and What Were You Thinking? (2011). Many of his books, most of which were published by Forthcoming Books, are available for download as PDFs at www.jalaltoufic.com.

In 2011–12, he was a participant in Documenta 13, Kassel, Germany; Sharjah Biennial, UAE; Shanghai Biennale, China; Athens Biennale, Greece; Meeting Points 6, Beirut Art Center, Lebanon, and Argos, Brussels, Belgium; Art in the Auditorium III, Whitechapel Gallery, London, UK, and GAMeC, Bergamo, Italy, among other venues; and Wunder, Deichtorhallen Hamburg, Germany. He was a guest of the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program for the year 2011.
