"Cloudscape" (2004), a middle-aged African-American man (the artist Terry Adkins) stands whistling an unidentified folk tune as studio-produced fog gathers around him, obscures him from sight, then clears. It's as if we're seeing the man in "Gestures/Reenactments" 30 years later, freed of old conflicts and constraints, but also harder to read and make sense of.
