Jalal Jemison was born in Santa Cruz, California. In 1999, Jalal received a BFA in film from the University of California at Santa Cruz and soon afterwards moved to Portland, Oregon. His film Brother Boy screened in the northwest at the 2006 Portland Experimental Film and Video Festival and was featured on OPB television's program Oregon Lense. In 2009, Jalal was the second unit director for Matt McCormick's feature film debut, Some Days are Better Than Others.
